Fears Renew as Violence Spreads Across Sudan
Speaking to journalists in Geneva, Volker Turk emphasized that "From Darfur and the Kordofans to Khartoum and Omdurman and beyond, no Sudanese civilian has been left untouched by the cruel and senseless violence."
He cautioned further: "I am extremely worried that we might see in Kordofan a repeat of the atrocities that have been committed in El-Fasher."
When questioned specifically about El-Fasher, Turk stressed the gravity of the situation, noting: "We are talking about very serious atrocity crimes, war crimes for sure, potentially also crimes against humanity."
He underscored that the violence has acquired a strong ethnic dimension, intensifying the already dire circumstances.
The three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—have endured prolonged and brutal clashes between the Sudanese military and the RSF, driving tens of thousands of residents to escape their homes in search of safety.
Across Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF now holds all five provinces within the Darfur region in the west, except for certain northern areas of North Darfur that remain under army authority.
Meanwhile, the military maintains control of most territories within the remaining 13 states spanning the south, north, east, and central regions, including the capital, Khartoum.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and has forced millions to flee.
The RSF additionally faces allegations of carrying out massacres, torture, and summary executions in El-Fasher.
