Lavrov Offers to Support Dialogue for Sudan Peace
Speaking at the event themed ‘Ukraine crisis. Diplomacy and settlement prospects,’ Lavrov emphasized that Moscow has consistently urged both Sudan’s Sovereign Council and its opposing factions to enter into negotiations. However, he acknowledged that meaningful dialogue has yet to occur.
The East African nation has been trapped in a violent civil war for over two years.
Lavrov highlighted that the current moment requires prioritizing solutions to the ongoing crisis and reiterated that Russia “is ready to facilitate” peace initiatives. He added that Moscow “has such capabilities” and assured that “if your [Sudanese] government is in favor, we will try to make use of these capabilities.”
Addressing allegations regarding the presence of foreign fighters, including Ukrainians, in the Sudanese conflict, Lavrov responded to claims that Ukrainian mercenaries were committing atrocities. He suggested that Sudan could directly engage with Ukraine to demand the halt of mercenary activities or request that Kiev investigate the matter if it professes ignorance.
