UN chief condemns killing of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers in Sudan

(MENAFN) The head of the United Nations has issued a forceful denunciation of an attack in southern Sudan that killed six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and wounded eight others, warning that such actions could amount to war crimes under international law.

In a public statement posted on social media on Sunday, the UN secretary-general condemned what he described as a brutal drone strike on a logistics facility in Kadugli that resulted in multiple casualties among Bangladeshi personnel serving in a UN peacekeeping mission. “I strongly condemn the horrific drone attacks that targeted the logistics base in Kadugli, Sudan, resulting in fatalities and injuries of members of the Bangladeshi UN Peacekeeping contingent,” he said.

He further emphasized the gravity of the incident, stating: “Attacks against UN peacekeepers like this one are unjustifiable and may constitute war crimes. I remind everyone of their obligation to protect UN personnel and civilians. There will need to be accountability.”

The UN chief also conveyed his sympathies to the families of those killed, as well as to the government and people of Bangladesh.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s interim leadership issued its own condemnation of the assault, describing it as a grave offense against global peace and humanitarian principles. According to official statements, the six Bangladeshi peacekeepers lost their lives and eight others were injured in “a drone attack by terrorists” on a UN base in the Abyei area of southern Sudan.

Expressing deep shock, Bangladesh’s interim leader said: “The United Nations has already been requested to take urgent measures to ensure the highest level of medical treatment and necessary assistance to the injured peacekeepers.”

The attack occurred against the backdrop of Sudan’s ongoing conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, a war that erupted in April 2023 and has since claimed thousands of lives while forcing millions from their homes.

Sudan’s military has attributed responsibility for the attack to the RSF, asserting that the incident “clearly reveals the subversive approach of the rebel militia and those behind it,” according to official statements.
