Sudanese Army Downs RSF Drones

(MENAFN) On Monday, the Sudanese military announced that it had intercepted suicide drones launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which were aimed at the Merowe Dam—the nation’s largest—as well as other military installations in northern Sudan.

According to a statement from the army’s 19th Infantry Division, the RSF directed multiple drones toward its headquarters, the Merowe Dam, and the Air Base in Northern State.

“All the drones were shot down before reaching their targets,” the statement declared.
The army further emphasized that its troops “are fully prepared to counter any threats” posed by RSF forces.

The RSF did not immediately issue a response to the military’s announcement.
This incident followed similar drone strikes the previous day against El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, and White Nile State in southern Sudan.

Sudanese officials have repeatedly accused the RSF of carrying out drone assaults on civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities and other key sites in northern and eastern cities. The RSF, however, has generally avoided commenting on such allegations.

Currently, the RSF controls all five states in the Darfur region, with the exception of several northern areas of North Darfur still held by the army. Meanwhile, the Sudanese military maintains authority over most of the remaining 13 states across the south, north, east, and central regions, including the capital, Khartoum.

The violent confrontation between the army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and forced millions of people from their homes.
